No hot water, radiators that stay cold, or a boiler showing a code and refusing to fire. In winter that is not an inconvenience but a house that cools down inside a day, and in a frost it is a pipe network at risk.
Nearly every Dutch home is heated by a wall hung gas combination boiler (cv-ketel) that makes both the heating water and the hot water for the taps. Write down the code on the display before you call and reset it once at most. If it comes straight back, the code is the fastest pointer to the part, and then that part comes along in the van.

Pressure too low
Below 1 bar a boiler shuts down. Topping up is something you can do yourself, through the filling valve under the boiler, up to about 1.5 bar with the system cold. If the pressure drops away again within a week, do not top up a second time but have the leak traced: repeated topping up brings oxygen into the system, and over time that costs you the boiler and the radiators.
Heating works, no hot water
Then the burner is fine and the problem is on the hot water side: the plate heat exchanger, the diverter valve or the flow sensor. In an area with hard water a plate heat exchanger silts up faster, and that can usually be flushed rather than replaced.
The boiler cuts out now and then
A boiler that locks out irregularly points at the flue or the air supply more often than at the boiler itself. In the ribbon development along the Ringvaart canal there are many older roof flue terminals (dakdoorvoer) where a strong wind pushes exhaust gas back down. That can be shown by reading the fault log during the visit.
Questions about boiler breakdowns
Can I top up the boiler myself?
Yes, to about 1.5 bar with the system cold, through the filling valve under the boiler. Do not go further: the pressure rises on its own as the water heats, and above 2.5 bar the safety valve discharges. If you have to top up more than once every six months, something is leaking.
What do I do with a fault code?
Write it down and reset once at most. If the code returns, it says enough to bring the right part along. Mention the code when you call; that often saves a second visit.
Do you work on every make?
On the makes that are common in this area, yes. On a boiler older than fifteen years a part is sometimes no longer available, and then you hear that, with what a replacement costs, so you can decide for yourself.
My radiators are only warm at the bottom.
There is air in them. Bleeding is something you can do yourself, with a small key at the valve on the top corner of the radiator and a cup underneath, working from the lowest radiator in the house to the highest. Check the pressure afterwards and top up to 1.5 bar if needed.
